Candi Deschamps

HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT CHAIR  |  CDESCHAMPS@YORK.ORG

Candi moved to the Monterey area from Brooklyn, NY to serve as the Chair of York’s English Department in fall of 2023.  After graduating from Smith College in 2005 with a B.A. in English Language & Literature, Candi worked in nonprofit offices in Manhattan for five years, including for the literary quarterly The Hudson Review, before the English classroom called her back. She received her M.A. in Teaching of English from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 2012.

Before joining the York faculty, Candi taught English and Debate at the Nightingale-Bamford School, a K-12 girls' school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, for eleven years.  Candi is a passionate, high-energy teacher focused on healthy discourse as a means of human connection, intellectual growth, and the foundation for excellent writing.

Candi has one husband, two small children, and three pets.  She enjoys nothing more than sharing a meal with friends and family while a great record plays in the background.  Her previous supervisor called her "shamelessly eclectic, radically egalitarian,” and she hopes to live up to this characterization at York for many years to come.
