In Memory of Lyman Hamilton
We are saddened to share that Lyman C. Hamilton, Jr. passed away on November 18, 2023 at age 97. Lyman served York School as a trustee from 2002-2014 and—along with his wife, Beverly—was a member of the Constance H. Bishop Society thanks to the establishment of the Beverly and Lyman Hamilton Scholarship. Throughout his life, Lyman gave over $350,000 in support of York’s mission: a belief shared by his son, current Board Treasurer, Rich Hamilton; daughter-in-law and York volunteer, Debra Schadeck; and grandson, Evan Hamilton ’17.
After growing up in Los Angeles during the Depression, Lyman enlisted in the Navy at age 17, graduating from the V-7 program’s Midshipman’s School at Columbia. After being one of 30 college seniors nationwide to be selected for an internship by the National Institute of Public Affairs in Washington D.C., and marrying college classmate Mary Shepard (who would become the mother of his four sons), Lyman graduated with a master’s degree from what is now the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
He began an international government career in 1950, working for the Bureau of the Budget’s international division and the U.S. Civil Administration of Japan’s Ryukyu Islands before moving into finance in 1960 with positions at the World Bank, ITT New York City, and a private equity firm, eventually retiring in 1993. In 1984, Lyman married the first woman to be vice president of United Technologies Corp., Beverly Lannquist, and supported her work in investment management and on nonprofit boards for 35 years until her own retirement.
In addition to serving on the Board of York School, Lyman was a trustee of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, the Monterey Symphony, the Hartford Symphony, and the advisory council of the Monterey Institute for International Studies.
We celebrate Lyman’s life and thank him and his wife Beverly for their vital contributions to York School.
